Racal Instruments, Inc. has received further orders for its 6113 base transceiver station (BTS) digital radio test sets for the Far East. The latest order, for 18 Racal BTS test sets, is destined for Yunnan Ministry of National Telecommunications (MNT) in the People's Republic of China. The network operator will use them to support Nokia GSM Base Station Systems in and around Kunming, the major city of Yunnan Province. This follows a similar order for over 40 of the 6113s placed by Schmidt & Co, Racal Instruments, Inc.' Far Eastern distributor, based in Hong Kong.

Esmond Chan, Racal Instruments, Inc.' regional sales manager for the Far East, commenting on the orders, said: "Nokia Mobile Phones has during the past two years delivered a number of systems to both Zhejiang and Yunnan Provinces - achieving a 40 per cent share of this expanding market. Ideal for field applications such as installation, commissioning and maintenance as well as production testing, Racal's 6113s retain the comprehensive features of their award-winning predecessors, dominating the market for digital radio test systems."

Continuing, Chan said: "The telecommunications and wireless communications markets in the region have grown faster than anywhere else in the world and mobile phone manufacturers are reporting continued strong demand. Over the past four years, the wireless element of the telecommunications market has grown from 32 million to over 200 million users, with the number of subscribers expected to exceed 650 million by the year 2000, of which 35 million will be in China alone."

Applicable to GSM 900, 1800 and 1900 systems, the 6113 combines small size, portability, ruggedness and ease of use with a very low cost of ownership. The 6113 allows every available type of GSM BTS to be fully tested both manually and automatically via both A-bis and RF interfaces. The instrument enables control of the BTS during testing by emulating the Base Station Controller (BSC). BTS manufacturers' equipment supported by Racal's 6113 include all the major manufacturers, such as Alcatel, Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, Nortel Matra, PKI and Siemens. The interfaces also allow the 6113 to perform receiver and transmitter Bit Error Rate (BER) measurements as well as message protocol logging and decoding on live networks.
