VeriWave Launches Performance Testing Solution For The Converged Network Edge

May 26, 2008

Portland, OR - VeriWave is introducing its first performance testing solutions optimized for the converged network edge encompassing wireless and wired LANs and addressing unique industry applications. The new edge solution consists of hardware and software optimized for the performance benchmarking needs of manufacturers of broadband residential gateways, edge and access routers, WAN acceleration appliances and broadband backhaul devices, as well as for service providers and IT departments deploying and troubleshooting converged networks.

"From an end-user perspective, the distinction between the wired and wireless parts of a network is disappearing," says Jessy Cavazos, Industry Manager, Test & Measurement at Frost & Sullivan. "Mobility, security and always-on connection to the network, are now universal requirements. That in turn means providers of edge devices have to design and test their products as one converged entity, regardless of its wired and/or wireless identity."

VeriWave's new edge testing solution consists of two components:

  • The WaveBlade Ethernet 1104 - a 4-port Gigabit Ethernet test blade supporting wire-rate TCP traffic generation and analysis on each port
  • WaveQoE - a test suite measuring end-user QoE (Quality of Experience) in specific vertical industry environments.

The WaveBlade Ethernet 1104 and WaveQoE are used with VeriWave's WaveTest performance benchmarking platforms. WaveTest is distinguished by its ability to generate actual traffic as seen in real live networks and by its unique approach to functional, performance, benchmarking and QoE testing. The solution features the industry's only pre-defined network traffic and usage profiles representative of vertical markets such as corporate branch offices, SOHO (Small Office / Home Office), healthcare, warehousing and retail.

With combined Ethernet and WiFi capabilities, VeriWave WaveTest becomes the only test solution to:

  • Test wireless and wired LANs as one single autonomous network
  • Enable creation of user/subscriber/client centric eco-systems
  • Deliver comprehensive QoE measurements, QoS and SLA (Service Level Agreement) metrics
  • Offer vertical market traffic and usage profiles
  • Offer line-rate and air-rate stateful Layer 4 traffic generation and analysis to test the network in real-world conditions
  • Provide a comprehensive wired and wireless security protocol stack

"In the process of becoming more mobile and integrated, the network edge is also becoming increasingly user, subscriber, and client aware," says Eran Karoly, VeriWave's vice president of marketing. "Existing test solutions used by most edge equipment makers and enterprises today do not comprehend client context, client mobility, and QoE measurements, the way our solution does. VeriWave now offers the most compelling test solution that addresses the modern edge of the network."

Karoly adds that while VeriWave's initial focus was on WLANs, market demand for the company's testing methodologies has expanded as the edge has evolved, "We have found that the level of control and repeatability and the detailed results our solution delivers was lacking in other areas of test. Makers of edge networking equipment came to us wanting to extend our solution to encompass wireless and wired LANs as they find it inefficient to have to distinguish between the two test regimes. Thus, we are emerging as the only true solution for the converged edge."
