Application Note: Custom Pulses Made Easy With ARTool

By Jerry Joseph, Product Applications Specialist, AR

AR's Automotive Transient Generator System, TGAR, has an exciting custom pulse editing tool that is as easy to use as drawing a pulse on a piece of paper. The ARTool (pronounced art – tool) allows the user to build custom pulses by piecing together individual function segments. Once the pulse is designed and saved, press the GENERATE PULSE button and the pulse is output to the DUT. This note details the ARTool and its capabilities.

The ARTool has many useful waveform segments in its toolbox to select from, including sinusoids, triangles, drop outs, positive pulses, rising and falling ramps, exponential, and an ISO 7637-2 pulse 2b type transient. Many segments can be strung together to make truly unique waveforms. Each waveform can be generated repeatedly as needed for the test.

The DC supply can be turned on or off between pulses. All of the functions in the ARTool are generated using the DC supply. For TG6032 the supply can output 0V to 60V at 32A, and the TG6100 can output 0V to 60V at 100A. The TG6032 amplifier has 70 kHz bandwidth and the TG6100 has 30 kHz bandwidth. Rise/fall times for step functions have been measured to be less than 5µs for the TG6032 unit. Like all TGAR test pulses, a report is generated automatically after the test is completed.
