Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories Selects Spirent For Mobile Backhaul Network Testing

Taiwan's Largest Carrier uses Spirent TestCenter to Validate Performance and Application Quality of Experience of its Mobile Backhaul Network

Sunnyvale, CA — The dramatic growth in mobile data traffic presents service providers with both opportunities and challenges. To leverage the opportunities and address the challenges, Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories (CHTTL), the research and development arm of Taiwan's largest network operator, is relying on Spirent TestCenter to help validate the performance of its mobile backhaul.

Service providers realize efficiencies and cost savings as they migrate from a TDM based mobile backhaul to a packet based network. During the transition to Ethernet/IP, service providers must also ensure that TDM-like reliability and OAM capabilities are maintained. Packets can be lost in Ethernet so the routers and switches must be carefully engineered to support timing and synchronization which are critical for scenarios such as call handovers between towers.

CHTTL is using Spirent TestCenter to ensure that its existing IP core network and new Ethernet mobile backhaul is ready to address customer requirements for higher bandwidth while delivering services with a high Quality of Experience (QoE). Specifically, Spirent's testing solution is being used to validate timing and synchronization while performing interoperability testing among equipment from a range of vendors.

Spirent is the only vendor to offer a complete mobile backhaul test solution that enables test engineers to quickly and easily verify the performance of devices under test while ensuring compliance with standards for new and emerging technologies.

"Service providers are quickly upgrading their mobile backhaul to meet the requirements of increasing data traffic on their network," said Gene Zhang, vice president, Asia at Spirent Communications. "However there are a number of key issues to be addressed during this transition and by leveraging Spirent's expertise and test solutions for the mobile backhaul, CHTTL is able to ensure the delivery of services with the highest QoE."

The latest version of Spirent's Mobile Backhaul solution validates packet timing protocols such as IEEE 1588v2 and SyncE SSM. It also tests physical timing characteristics by generating and measuring impairments such as wander and packet delay variation. Earlier this year, Spirent TestCenter Mobile Backhaul received Test & Measurement World magazine's 2011 Best in Test award. Based on votes from the magazine's readers, the award recognizes the company's innovation and product excellence in mobile backhaul network testing.
