The second Electrostatic Discharge Standard written by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) was completed and agreed upon back in 1991. This standard and other IEC 801 series standards changed to IEC 61000 series standards. Then, the new IEC 61000-4-2 test standard was then adopted, Harmonized, and published to be a European Norm, (i.e., EN 61000-4-2). Like IEC 801-2:1984 the first ESD test standard, the second edition was written to define the immunity requirements for equipment, test methods, and test procedures. It also establishes a common reference for evaluating the performance of equipment when subjected to ESD which is representative of a typical Human Body discharge (i.e., a Human Body Model). From the First edition, the Second edition has some differences from the setup, method of testing, and the requirements for the ESD simulator used. With respect to the ESD simulator, the changes are 1) to be able to do both plus and minus polarity discharges, 2) it has to be able to perform both through air and contact discharges, 3) two different types of discharge tips are given, and 4) the nominal output impedance from the generator has been changed.
Allied Instruments has developed such a simulator, which can generate ESD to these test standards. This instrument can be used to do actual qualification testing pursuant to many Generic, Medical and Product Specific performance requirements. These immunity performance standards are used for compliance pursuant to the EMC Directive (89/336/EEC) to obtain the CE mark. Designed to the standard and engineered for easy operation, the HBM-2 provides user-friendly, innovative design features. An operator can readily change polarity or discharge modes with our straight forward operation and quick-change tip design.
The HBM-2 models include the Hand-held HBM-2, Contact and Through-Air Interchangeable Tips, IEC/EN Ground Cable, AC Adapter and Instruction Manual. Carrying Case. One year limited warranty included.
