HP Introduces Software to Speed Commercial Radiated EMI Testing

Hewlett-Packard Company is introducing software designed to speed the entire process of testing to meet commercial radiated electromagnetic interference (EMI) regulations. The new software offers a number of features to help electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) engineers and technicians test radiated emissions from commercial products.

The HP 85876B software automatically performs a series of predefined measurements, data comparisons, file transfers and reporting sequences. A report-generation interface lets a user define custom compliance reports for submittal to regulatory agencies or for archives.

The software runs on Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 3.1, Windows 95 and Windows NT(R) 4.0 Environments. The software requires no additional programming or scripting to operate. Reports can be saved as Rich Text Format (.rtf) files, and graphics of equipment setups and receiver traces can be saved as Windows Metafile (.wmf) files for simple export to popular word processing applications.

The HP 85876B commercial radiated EMI software includes test configurations and libraries for worldwide commercial EMI regulations, as well as sample test configurations for chambers and open-area test sites. To save time, multiple tests can run from a single, easily modified equipment-configuration template.

The software also provides interactive measurement features that help the user quickly characterize problem emissions. For example, the EMI receiver, antenna tower and turntable can be controlled and viewed through the software to verify the highest emissions of the equipment under test (maximization). Also, while viewing current receiver data, the operator can add any signal to an active list with a simple marker function.

Users can view corrected data in broad-span (composite-trace) and narrow-span (segment-trace) displays at the same time. Composite-trace data can be viewed and output with a convenient log-frequency scale.

HP EMI receivers supported by the new software include the HP 8542E, 85422E, 8546A, 85462A, 8571/2A and 8573/4B.
