New Inductive Cable Clamp speeds buried cable locating

MILPITAS, California, June 16, 2000—Metro Tel Corp. of Milpitas, California, today announced that its Super Cable Hound Cable and Metallic Pipe Locator now incorporates an Inductive Cable Clamp for fast, accurate determination of buried cable location and depth.

According to Jerry Burg, Vice-President Marketing, "The Super Cable Hound is the recently announced successor to Metro Tel's legendary Cable Hound Locator, which has been widely used by utility and construction organizations around the world for almost two decades."

In operation, the Super Cable Hound transmitter applies a sensing signal to the cable to be located. Carrying a compact, hand-held tone receiver and probe, the operator then traverses the cable site until the desired location and depth indications are received.

The new Inductive Cable Clamp enables the cable locator operator to apply a sensing signal to a single cable or a bundle of cables by induction rather than by metallic contact. This speeds the test setup, while providing a strong, reliable tone for location and depth sensing.

The Super Cable Hound also features dual frequency operation. The unit': high frequency mode is used when locating with the Inductive Cable Clamp, as well as with higher-resistance cable and all types of cable in heavily congested areas. The low frequency mode permits the location of cables over distances of 5,000 feet or more and depths down to 8 feet.

A unique tone probe lets the operator perform sensing procedures while standing upright, eliminating the need to "duck walk" along the cable site. The tone probe is lightweight, easy-to-use, and provided with a 45° bubble level for accurate depth determination.

A Super Cable Hound locator consists of battery-powered transmitter and receiver units, together with a tone probe, ground rod, inductive cable clamp, and connecting cables all packaged together in a compact, lightweight carrying case designed for rugged field use.
