Nortel Networks Chooses Viewlogic EDA Solutions to Evolve its Global Design Environment

Viewlogic Systems Inc. (Marlboro, MA) will supply Nortel Networks with its complete suite of electronic design software and services for designing electronic products through a Flexible Access Model (FAM) contract. Nortel Networks will deploy Viewlogic solutions to its engineering teams worldwide to help achieve faster design cycles, resulting in improved time-to-market for end products.

"Viewlogic offered Nortel Networks a value proposition that gives design teams the flexibility to access tools and services for system design on an ‘as-needed basis,'" says Dave Hudson, VP of Nortel Networks Product Development Environment. "This enables us to accommodate rapid changes in technology and shrinking product design cycles. We will certainly be looking to develop this business model with other key suppliers in the future."

The new agreement, set for re-negotiation in September 2000, increases Nortel Networks' flexibility to build a platform-independent computer-aided design (CAD) capability into its global design environment. The Viewlogic suite of tools replaces a Nortel Networks proprietary schematic capture tool and provides additional capability for high-speed system design, verification and simulation. Viewlogic's Design Exchange offerings provide web-based design data management and distribution capabilities to Nortel Networks' geographically dispersed teams.

Viewlogic's eProduct Services organization will provide Nortel Networks engineers with a range of design services including some on-site consulting for high-speed design methodology, modeling and customization. The company defines "eProducts" as products that are differentiated by their electronic content. Additionally, Viewlogic's Customer Support organization will help Nortel accelerate its adoption of new technologies through their existing training program at Nortel Networks design locations worldwide.

"Viewlogic recognizes the importance of an agreement which addresses the needs of the system-level designer and the entire worldwide engineering enterprise," says Will Herman, Viewlogic president and CEO. "We are eager to work with Nortel Networks to see this higher-level approach optimize their complete product design cycle."

Nortel Networks delivers value to customers worldwide through Unified Networks solutions, spanning mission-critical telephony and IP-optimized networks. Customers include public and private enterprises and institutions, Internet service providers, local, long-distance, cellular and PCS communications companies, cable television carriers and utilities.
