The notebook is distinguished by their Magnesium casing with rubber bumper corners The RoughRider series weigh between 9.5 to 10.78 pounds and built to withstand abnormal conditions—rain or wet environments, bumpy roads, rough handling and extreme temperatures.
The RoughRider machines are water-resistant with a membrane-covered keyboard, a well protected display screen, and I/O ports are sealed with watertight rubber doors. It can operate in a four inch per hour rainstorm, in salty air, or in wind and dust storms. It is shockproof, capable of surviving 30g of vibration during operating conditions. The Rough Rider I series, another one of Xenocom's products can run safely in temperatures ranging from –20 degrees Celsius to +50 degrees and altitudes of up to 15,000 feet, and will "keep on ticking" after a three-foot drop.
To further accommodate outdoor use, the notebook features anti-glare screen for extreme sunlight applications with sand and dustproof covers for the keyboard.
Users of the Rough Rider series can also take advantage of a special option package consisting of an internal PCMCIA wireless LAN or Modem, Touch screen (12.1" only), 24X CD/DVD-ROM, secondary battery 45.4 watts per hour Lithium-Ion, 89-key rubber pad type keyboard with backlight, 120MB LS-120 floppy drive, internal 100Base-T LAN card, internal 56.6K V.90 fax/modem, car adapter, external battery charger, internal sound card, Expansion unit with 2 PCI or ISA slots.
The RoughRider series offers a true sunlight readable 12.1in (800X600) or 13.3in (1024X768) Active Matrix display with anti-glare protection cover, Intel Pentium Celeron or PII 400Mhz as well as Pentium III/450/500 and 600Mhz processors with 64MB RAM, expandable to 256MB, 6GB hard drive, 128K to 256K on-die cache, 2.5 to 8MB video RAM With 2X AGP, Built in 16-bit sound card with stereo speakers, external speakers and microphone jacks, and IrDA infrared (fast 4MB/Sec transfer rate) and USB ports.
